After Reagan destroyed Mondale in the 1984 election, the Democratic Party abandoned its labor/working class - Liberal/Left Wing and started to move Right, becoming more and more 'business friendly'. In response, the GOP also moved more to the Right.
As this trend continued, the Tea Party was the first overt manifestation that the GOP had entered 'Bat Country'. Trump, being the natural conman that he is, ran with this hysterical paradigm. Now, a QAnon Republican looks likely to enter Congress in a few weeks.
Meanwhile, the ideological and economic platform of the Biden campaign would feel quite comfortable to most traditional Republicans from the late 70's and early 80's.
