...this is from Jul. 23rd, 2013..I thought now would be a perfect time to re-post it...

"All politics is local." ~'Tip' O'Neill

~Which is why, in the end, democracy fails. Because humans are, as a rule, 'provincial', which is a socio-cultural way of saying that they are primarily concerned with their own immediate sphere of interest, tend to ignore everything outside of that sphere and react with fear/anger whenever the larger sphere impinges. That prevents most humans from thinking 'globally' or even 'nationally'. Now hold that thought...

"Why should I concern myself with how many die? Even the Christian Bible says what is man that God should be mindful of him? For me men are nothing but a brain at one end and a shit factory at the other." ~Aurelio Peccei, founder and first president of the Club of Rome

In 1972 The Club of Rome published a historical document, “The Limits to Growth,” described by Wikipedia as a “book about the computer modeling of unchecked economic and population growth with finite resource supplies.” I remember at the time it generated a lot of speculation and controversy, but for the general population, like so many things before it, it went down The Memory Hole, eclipsed by Watergate and then the Fall of Saigon. [see "All politics is local."]

Aurelio Peccei was one the authors of that report and his sentiments are fairly clear.

“The Limits to Growth,” was also, I have come to believe, a warning to the population of Earth from The Western Financial Elites; “Since you are obviously incapable of controlling your own affairs and managing your own resources, we are going to gather up as much of them as we can lay our hands upon, build ourselves safe havens and let the rest of you drown in your own shit. In fact, we plan to expedite that by making things as bad as possible in order to get this over with as fast as possible.” In other words, a Culling.

I suspect they made that decision not so much because they are evil – though there is certainly some sociopathic reasoning in the mix – but because, seeing that “All politics are local,” they already knew that the solutions required to head off Global Catastrophe would be impossible to implement. Keep in mind that at the time The Cold War was still going strong, America was socioculturally unraveling and China had just wrapped up The Cultural Revolution.

In that context, I really cannot fault the logic, even if I am one of those likely to culled.

I have imagined snippets of conversations such as these, uttered not at secret meetings in darkened rooms, but at bright social gatherings over cocktails:

“Let it all got to hell.”

“They will rebel.”

“We'll make Consumerism ubiquitous and fund their social hatreds.”

“But we cannot control something like that.”

“No, but we can guide it and we can survive it. We'll surf the apocalypse.”

If I were in their position, I'd do much the same thing, though as those of you who know me will understand that my 'grand scheme' is of a somewhat different design. And because of that, while I expect this Culling will more or less succeed, I have my doubts that it will play out at all close to what The Elites hope for.

But the die have been cast and now what shall be, shall be...

First things First...

Accelerating Climate Change is not 'in the future', it is here NOW and we're well past being able to stop it. Maybe slow it down marginally, but we're not really trying. Recycling and other 'consumer based' efforts are bullshit made up by corporations to shift the blame. In fact, it is the major global industries that are generating the vast amount of heat pollution and they're not stopping or even slowing down. Not to mention micro-plastics in everything...

That The Corporate Confederacy is fighting any change in this regard is pretty obvious: such threatens their Bottom Line and "Profits Before People" is tattooed on the inside of their eyelids. They also believe their wealth and power will allow them to 'ride it out'.

The [mostly White] Right Wing political movement hates the concept because they want to return to an imagined 'golden age' and Accelerating Climate Change totally shitcans that entire dream.

The Modern Left is politically impotent in the face of Corporate Power and fairly delusional about the outcome of this crisis. Lots of 'Positive Thinking' horseshit.

I'm seventy two and will probably be dead before the worst of it hits. [crosses fingers] But last summer did knock the ever livin' shit outta me. I also keep my fingers crossed that our electricity and our supply chains hold up until me and mine have moved on.

Those of you under say, forty to fifty, y'all are fucked and your kids and grand kids doubly so. Accelerating Climate Change will shorten your lives and likely kill many, if not most, of your children. Sorry...

Since this is an "Her Prophet" post, I need to speak of The Sisterhood. [SH]

From the very beginning, I have worked on SH as being a movement that can actually 'ride this out'. The whole Transhumanist Amazon paradigm is based upon surviving this catastrophe and flourishing on the other side of it. I'm still somewhat pessimistic, but such is my nature. I know too much fuckin' history. But Dum spiro spero, "While I breathe, I hope", hence is rather depressing missive.

I could rant another half dozen paragraphs, but this tired me, and so I shall wrap it up...

...and so it is.

The Human Race is riding a runaway train to hell [aka Accelerating Climate Change] while we argue about Profits and Pronouns, about when Life legally begins, about Borders and National Identity, most of us willfully ignoring the looming doom of our species.

I'll be seventy years old in a month and a half. My goal is to outlive our cats and my wife. Then I'll be free to punch my ticket if so moved. *shrugs* Not much else I can do really...

...and so it is.

More and more I get badly depressed after I read my news feed. First though, I get Really Fuckin' Angry. The depression comes after when I realize I cannot say out loud what I want to say because I'd get banned from whatever social media platform and possibly even 'investigated for terrorist threats'.

However, without getting specific, what I still can say [so far] is that I desire terrible and ugly things to happen to The Owners, to their operatives, sycophants and political stooges, hell, even to their families, as well...as terrible and ugly as possible.

But not all this comes from my 'bottomless rage'. It also comes from my awareness that without the real fear of 'terrible and ugly' consequences, The Owners, their operatives, sycophants and political stooges will continue to rape all of the rest of us in any manner that suits them and their vested interests.

~I keep reading endless numbers of articles and essays about how Trump became president. And none of the them really seem to get it. Chris Hughes comes close, but he seems to have lost his mind. Can't blame him really, as everyone is dancing around the elephant in the room; we are in fact already IN Collapse, eg, The System is in Terminal Failure.

We are in Late Stage Capitalism. What that means is as the profit margins get narrower, The Owners need to squeeze harder to extract said profits. This has been going for a few decades now, but for the general public, the 'balloon went up' with the Crash of '09, which was the direct result of The Big Squeeze. Wall Street et al created a Housing Bubble of insane proportions via all manner of shady and even illegal marketing and accounting games.

When the shit hit the fan, they got their political lackeys to use Tax Payer Money to 'reimburse' them for their loses and left said Tax Payers out to dry. Roughly 40% of the American Middle Class Wealth was lost. FORTY PERCENT. That meant eroded tax bases, gutted pension funds, wrecked state and municipal bond portfolios.

That is what Obama inherited. And, being the Corporatist he is, he bunted economically. The perfect example is the ACA [which originated with The Heritage Foundation, a very right wing think tank]. He'd promised a Public Option over and over and over again on the campaign trail. Withing a month of his Inauguration, it had vanished, forcing thirty million Americans into the clutches of the Insurance Industry. [see The Big Squeeze]

Eight years later, after more and more of that kind of betrayal from the Democrats and the insane slavering obstructionism of the GOP, the American Electorate had come to hate the establishments of both parties. And two Insurgent candidates emerged from outside of each party; Bernie and The Donald.

We all know what happened. The 'undisciplined' Dems suddenly became Very Disciplined and sandbagged Bernie. And the infamously disciplined GOP fielded a slate of total buffoons and got its clock cleaned.

Even then, Hillary should have won. She did in fact 'win' The Vote. But her ground game sucked so badly [arrogance], and the Dems had alienated so much of their own base [more arrogance], she lost four states by roughly 120K votes in total.

And that boys and girls, is how Collapse works. The System becomes so rotten that a Black Swan like The Donald can end up in the White House. [EDIT: 5/5/22 At this point I made some noise about 'The Deep State gaming The System in order to fix the problem and do a reset' but they turned out to be fuckin' gutless and did fuck all, while The Owners, those traitorous scum, got their $1.4 trillion and so didn't give a fuck]

But we are still in Late Stage Capitalism and Collapse is still underway and no one has any real idea what to do about that ...except, of course, More Of The Same, which is a well known definition of insanity.

Toss the now inevitable Catastrophic Climate Change into the mix and one can be certain that the next century or so is going to be 'very interesting times' indeed.

Ok, had some coffee now...lol

I started to study history, most especially Military History, when I was nine years old. [I'll be seventy this year] When I was seventeen I was out in the streets demonstrating against the Vietnam War. Organized students at my high school and we confronted the police, violently. [made for great post-demo sex lol]

The single Great Sociopolitical Lesson I learned with that was how classic National Socialist crowd control techniques worked seamlessly on Leftist art students. [I went to the old High School of Art & Design in NYC] With proper technique, The Herd is easily guided and controlled no matter how intelligent its individual members may be...and most people ain't that bright.

Many of us, myself included for a while, truly believed 'The Revolution was at hand'. What we got instead was Nixon, Reagan and finally Trump, plus Corporatist Apparatchiks like Clinton, Obama...and ofc Joe Biden. [Goddess Bless Jimmy Carter tho, he has remained a Good Man] And nearly all my Old Comrades became Capitalist Roaders, aka 'Yuppies'.

I was never a Communist, tho I used some of their rhetoric. Even as a teen it was easy to see that Stalin and Mao were homicidal psychopaths, that no Russian or Chinese workers 'owned the means of production' and the so-called 'communist states' were really Authoritarian State Capitalist.

Democracy works fine in small polities, maybe no more than five or ten thousand people. That is the maximum most Baseline Humans can handle. Beyond that, all the institutional mechanisms required to run a Modern Technological State outstrip the Baseline Human capacity to keep track them. After that, running things gets 'farmed out' and that's where Corruption starts to kick in. Once we get to millions of people, it is endemic and Democracy is more and more subsumed until we get to our present state, the Inverted Totalitarianism you so blithely dismissed.

Baseline Humans [me, thee and all we know] simply cannot make Mass Democracy work. Just look at how most of us deal with Accelerating Climate Change, which is likely to kill most if not all of us. Denial...Denial...Denial...Extinction.

That, more than anything else, led me to become a Transhumanist. Unfortunately, it is almost certain that The Rich and Powerful will be the main beneficiaries of the Genetic Engineering and Cybernetic Augmentation technologies that are being developed in this very moment. But maybe a workable form of Democracy will come out of these New Humans having a Cybernetic form of Telepathy where one can download all the information required directly into one's mind.

Of course, I have little doubt that a Genetically Engineered 'laboring class' of 'less than humans' will be created to serve these New Humans, controlled by brain implants and 'made happy with their lot'. We love having servants.

Because of our failure to deal with Accelerating Climate Change, these New Humans will have to live underground and in orbit for a while, centuries I expect. But I'm sure they'll adapt just fine. They'll still be 'humans' and we're like f'ing cockroaches. lol

Me, I live out in the desert with my 2nd wife and our many cats, which worked out quite nicely in The Time of Covid [a symptom of Accelerating Climate Change BTW]. I write and think and pass the time until I pass onto the next Turn of The Wheel.

You see, I'm [mostly] at the Acceptance Stage of Grief, while you seem to be somewhere in the Anger/Bargaining Stages. /sigh I suppose that's in part a function of age...

...and that's just about that.

"The truth is that this culture is insane. When Derrick asks his audiences, “Does anyone here believe that our culture will undergo a voluntary transformation to a sane and sustainable way of living?” — and he’s asked it for years, all around the country—no one says yes. That means that most people, or at least most people with a beating heart, have already done the math, added up the arrogance, sadism, stupidity, and denial, and reached the bottom line: a dead planet. Some of us carry that final sum like the weight of a corpse. For others, that conclusion turns the heart to a smoldering coal. But despair and rage have been declared unevolved and unclean, beneath the “spiritual warriors” who insist they will save the planet by “healing” themselves. How this activity will stop the release of carbon and the felling of forests is never actually explained. The answer lies vaguely between being the change we wish to see and a hundredth monkey of hope, a monkey that is frankly more Christmas pony than actual possibility.

Given that the culture of America is founded on individualism and awash in privilege, it’s no surprise that narcissism is the end result. The social upheavals of the 60s split along fault lines of responsibility and hedonism, of justice and selfishness, of sacrifice and entitlement. What we are left with is an alternative culture that offers workshops on our “scarcity consciousness,” as if poverty were a state of mind and not a structural support of capitalism. This culture leaves us ill-prepared to face the crisis of planetary biocide that greets us daily with its own grim dawn. The facts are not conducive to an open-hearted state of wonder. To confront the truth as adults, not as faux-children, requires an adult fortitude and courage, grounded in our adult responsibilities to the world. It requires those things because the situation is horrific and living with that knowledge will hurt. Meanwhile, I have been to workshops where global warming is treated as an opportunity for personal growth, and no one but me sees a problem with that." ~Deep Green Resistance: Strategy to Save the Planet Excerpt

The Earth's surface is going to become largely uninhabitable for maybe a thousand years, give or take a century.

Our descendants, Homo Transformis [Genetically Modified/Cybernetically Augmented in various ways], will replace us, going both underground and in orbit and beyond. The Rich are already buying their bunkers and peeps like Musk, Bezos and Branson are heavily investing in space travel.

Me, I'm doing my best to enjoy my last decade or two. I have near zero hope that things will substantially improve."

~I’ve pretty much given up any hope for a better future, at least in my lifetime. I’ve given up on the hopes and dreams I held on to for the last two decades and have just settled in to enjoy the fairly comfortable life we now have for as long as it lasts. The only wish I have left is that whatever kills us takes our fur babies, too. My fear is that they will be left behind, scared and hungry. /sigh

We humans have at least a century of disaster and collapse ahead of us. Yeah, if Biden gets elected the overt horror and brutality of the Trump White House will abate. But Biden is not going to change the underlying conditions that led us to Trump. He’ll simply be a ‘pause button’. /sigh

Yeah, I’m sighing a lot. I nurtured the idea of The Sisterhood for a long time. It was what got me through much of my fear and worry the past twenty four years. But La Rona has crushed that. And no one has really stepped up to lead it anyway.

What I suspect will happen in the next hundred years or so is that Catastrophic Climate Change will finally break our civilization, which has proved to be quite brittle anyway, and the race will split in two, one group going underground and the other up into orbit and hopefully beyond. Both groups will almost certainly be ‘modified’ – genetically and cybernetically – to adapt to their new environments and each will diverge from the other.

We Baseline Humans will be left upon a ravaged surface and will likely go extinct. *shrugs* Oh well.

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, I’m gonna have some coffee and a banana and take my meds and supplements…and there ya have it. Nebs out…

Most of humankind is really not worth saving. Look at how we treat each other. And Mother will produce more animals and trees in due course ...and they shall be beautiful.

That said, humans are like cockroaches; very very hard to kill off. I suspect Baseline Humans [me and thee] will become extinct over the next century or so as we have shat our nest. But our Cybernetically Augmented and Genetically Engineered descendants will survive, even flourish, both below the Earth's surface and out in space.

Sigh...

Your problem is that you, like so many others, are still trying to save The Republic. Sorry, pal, but The Republic died during the Reagan administration, both for the obvious reasons and because the Democrats abandoned the New Deal paradigm and became fully fledged Corporatists.

The Clintons are Corporatists. Obama is a Corporatists. And so is Smilin' Joe. That is just more of the same shit that makes The Rich richer, The Poor poorer and is sucking the life outta the Middle Class. We are now an Oligarchy.

RE Trump's supporters: "Trump hates what they hate and is destroying what they feel has been stolen from them. His base is happy to see it all burn down."

I support Bernie [and probably Warren] not because I think he'll save The Republic, but because I'm pretty sure his policies would make the last few decades of my life a bit easier.

As for the long run...? Well, I wrote the below about ten years ago:

TO DEFEAT THE CORPORATE CONFEDERACY TAKES PATIENCE AND GUILE

“Do not expect to defeat The Corporate Confederacy at the ballot box. Big Money can power its way through almost any election cycle. That is not however a call for Revolution. Big Money can power its way through those as well and rather unpleasantly.

Instead it must always be remembered that by its conscienceless and rapacious nature, the thing sows the seeds of its own destruction. Therefore what is required is both the ability to survive its collapse *and* to have another functional structure extent to replace it. Anything else is empty rhetoric.”

It's seems pretty clear y'all are operating from the Same Ol' Same Ol'. I understand. The future that confronts us IS Fucking Scary. [see Catastrophic Climate Change, Super AI, Nenotech, Genetic Engineering, etc] But the old paradigms ain't gonna save us...

~There's a series of novels by John Barnes collectively called 'Daybreak' that haunt me.

Wikipedia describes it thus: “In the near future a variety of groups with diverse aims, but an overlapping desire to end modern technological society (the "Big System"), create a nanotech plague ("Daybreak") which both destroys petroleum-based fuels, rubber and plastics and eats away any metal conductors carrying electricity.

The Daybreak plague strikes, and world governments are helpless to deal with it. Industrial civilization rapidly breaks down, and tens of millions die in the U.S. alone (the global death toll measures in the billions).”
Etc.

I was just making coffee this am and it crept up on me. I looked at all the things there in my kitchen that would 'breakdown' and leave me and mine helpless...

/sigh

Just a story, right? Yeah...and there are a number of real things could clean our racial clock. Obviously, there is Catastrophic Climate Change. We know that is underway, yet fight over if it really is or how bad it's really going to be.

However there are other things the vast majority don't think about or are even aware of. Asteroids of course. But there's also Solar Flares, a tongue of plasmic fire that could 'reach out and touch us', leaving at least one side of the Earth scorched melting rubble. And Super Volcanoes, their blast the power of a dozen hydrogen bombs and their cloud of dust covering half the planet, plunging us into a massive Ace Age. And some really esoteric shit like radiation shock waves from Super Novas, traveling trillions and trillions of miles through space, crisping all biological life in its path.

Any one of these could happen even as you read these words....even as I type them. /sips coffee

And yet...well, just look at your news feed. We're squabbling over so many things that really ain't worth one third of a single fuck in the long run. Hell, even Donald Trump will just be an ugly foot note, kinda like Caligula, in the big histories...assuming of course any humans are left to write them.

Which, as ever, brings me to being Her Prophet. My Eternal Question is "Why am I even bothering?" I can count 'those who believe' on maybe one hand and I cannot even finish my Holy Book.

/sighs some more

I suppose that doesn't matter either. I'm just a tiny bug, on a tiny pebble, floating in the vastness of The Universe...

~Mentions Fully Automated Luxury Communism to Conservative Person in response to his mention of The Cloward–Piven strategy~

Moi: “Unfortunately, Catastrophic Climate Change is gonna shitcan that idea. Not sure how bad it will be, but it's going to 'crash the system' one way or another.”

Conservative Person: “The earth always go through cycles and I think we can equate it to those who bought up the mountains in CA in the 1970's bc a fault was going to make that beachfront property.” ::smile emoji::

Moi: “Yes, the earth goes thru cycles and a warming trend was on the menu, temps going up few degrees over a few centuries. What humans did was pump trillions of tons of extra hydrocarbons into that cycle and accelerate it. Now temps are rising further and faster, several degrees over only several decades, That s what makes this Climate Change cycle 'Catastrophic'. It's too much, too fast and it is hitting all of earth's systems too hard.

How bad it is going to be I cannot say. As ever, the Global South will suffer more than the Global North, The Equatorial Regions will be hit the hardest, may even become uninhabitable for a period of time, which will of course drive more refugees north, creating violent social confrontations. Coast lines will recede, cities will drown and previously useful farmland will die, causing famine. Increased heat will also cause an increase in disease.

But those are all things we as a species can survive.

At the other extreme, the surface of the planet might become entirely uninhabitable for centuries, dividing the survivors into those who live underground and those who live in space, basically the metaphor of the Morlocks and the Eloi. Each group will have to 'engineer' themselves, Genetically and Cybernetically, in order to adapt.

But, as I said, I cannot say how bad things will get. One thing I'm fairly certain of; Catastrophic Climate Change will kill Capitalism dead. We'll likely even see trials of Corporate executives for Crimes Against Humanity, tho that also depends upon how fast and how far things go in the shitter.”

Part of the problem with talking to Americans about Climate Change is the use of Celsius. So here's a little heads up...

2°C = 35.6°F

4°C = 39.2°F

So the average temp in NYC in August is 82°F. A global rise of 2°C would make that 118.6°F. A global rise of 4°C would make that 121.2°F.

The average temp in NYC in January is 27°F. A global rise of 2°C would make that 62.6°F. A global rise of 4°C would make that 66.2°F.

Those are averages, not highs. And those two numbers are a 'best case' scenario by the second half of this century if we get busy. If not, temps could go by 8°C [46.4°F] to 12°C [53.6°F]. I'll let y'all do your own math on that...

Here's the Good News/Bad News regarding the 2016 Presidential Election. A Clinton II White House and a Trump White House will each suck badly, just in their own special ways. But neither one will be the fucking Apocalypse, so chill the fuck out with that noise.

That said, I'm inclined toward a Trump White House – which would almost certainly be a chaotic nightmare, as opposed to Hillary's battened down Corporatist horror show – because if he defeats Hillary, that will likely destroy the Clintonista wing of the DNC. And will almost certainly wreck the GOP in the following four years...if he doesn't say fuck it and walk away beforehand, that is. [Trust me, The Donald is perfectly capable of that]

And then maybe, just maybe, Bernie et al, could salvage something out of all that wreckage. That's the Good News.

The Bad News is that either White House will not make a great difference in the overall state of things. We are in Collapse, which is not tattooed barbarians roaming the highway, but the general break down of the Social Contract, the one where The Rulers agree to allow the rest of us to have decent lives while we allow them to be Rich and Powerful.

Extreme Climate Change, endemic economic inequality, and the final brutal stages of Capitalism are all in the pipeline and we seem incapable as a species to stop them....so we therefore get to ride them out.

Even Bernie has said – many many times over – no single President can turn that around. And I suspect we're going to see far tougher times ahead before we as a race come out the other end. And I seriously doubt the American Republic will come out of that other end with us.....

...so enjoy what you have now. What you do come November probably won't make that much of a difference in the long run.

Catastrophic Climate Change will handle the issue.

Runaway global warming will end all life on Earth; that is not a solution.

Michael Varian Daly
No it won't. Life is amazingly tenacious. There is Life at the bottom of the ocean and in the bellies of volcanoes. Life has survived asteroid strikes and volcanic 'nuclear' winters.

Hell, CCC won't even kill us off. We're like cockroaches. Yes, things are going to be unpleasant for a few centuries, but we'll survive..and keep our technological civilization, too.

Keep in mind that the total population of the Earth when Columbus first set foot on Hispaniola was apx 480 million. That's barely 5% of today's total. Or two thirds of the US' total.

So, stop being an alarmist and start figuring out how to help us survive, because we're already past the Tipping Point and The Age of Storms is upon us....

"The Global Climate has never been 'harmonious and balanced'. That's a Nature Lover's fantasy. It is fluid and dynamic and a warming trend was very likely on the menu anyway. However, that trend would have unfolded over a couple/three centuries and been 'manageable' from the human point of view.

But what we humans have done is to pump tens of trillions of tons of hydrocarbons into that fluid and dynamic system and supercharged it. Now it is getting warmer faster than it would have and the mean temperatures will be higher. Plus its storm systems will be far more violent. That is not simply natural 'climate change'; that is Catastrophic Climate Change.

It is probably that we are past any point of stopping this or even of ameliorating it. We just get to ride it out. We will survive this. We're like fucking cockroaches. But it's going to an unpleasant transit and a lot of us are going to suffer and die because of it."
