We already set the apocalypse in motion. It's called Accelerating Climate Change and it has become unstoppable. Now how that is going to manifest is as yet unknown. Best case, we're in for a century or two of really harsh weather that will require significant social and economic shifts in order to ride that out. Worst case, the surface of the planet will become uninhabitable. In that latter outcome, humans will have the option of going underground or into space, with the use of genetic engineering and cybernetic augmentation to survive in various environments. Of course, genetic engineering and cybernetic augmentation of humans is in the cards no matter what.
